Handicrafts in Northern Cyprus

Lefkara lace is one of the sources of pride of Northern Cyprus. These elegant embroidery have been shaped by the blending of Venetian and Cypriot culture over the centuries. Lefkara lace, each meticulously embroidered, tells a story steeped in history and remains popular today.

Lapta lace is like a work of art. This handicraft, unique to Cypriots, is performed by masters around Lapta. With its unique patterns and delicate workmanship, Lapta lace reflects the cultural texture of Cyprus.

Cocoon work is another special handicraft. This art, unique to Cyprus, emerges by processing silk cocoons in unique ways. The cocoon work, every detail of which is meticulously processed, carries the artistic heritage of Cyprus.

Baskets and ornaments made with natural materials of Cyprus are also an important part of handicraft. Reeds, straw and palm tree branches are carefully woven by craftsmen to create unique works.

However, these valuable handicrafts face some challenges today. The widespread use of plastic chairs and the decrease in meticulous work are threatening traditional chair making. However, there are courses and associations that strive to prevent these arts from disappearing.

As a result, handicrafts and traditional handicrafts of Northern Cyprus are part of its culture and these arts will continue to live in the hands of masters.
